Professor Associado em História da Arte e Cultura Visual Moderna e Contemporânea na Universidade de Exeter, Reino Unido. A sua investigação interdisciplinar é informada pela cultura visual, teoria queer, estudos de performance e pós-humanidades, de forma a pensar a produção e mediação de corpos e subjectividades na cultura contemporânea, as suas dimensões materiais, afectivas e éticas, bem como os seus modos de pertença. Entre 2019 e 2021, enquanto Leadership Fellow do Arts and Humanities Research Council, o seu trabalho estuda de que forma a introdução de antirretrovirais para o tratamento e profilaxia do VIH facilitou o desenvolvimento de novos tipos de comportamento sexual e masculinidades gay que, por seu lado, começaram a ser mediados pela pornografia gay do século XXI. A sua monografia Porous Masculinities (título provisório) será publicada pela Routledge em 2020.

Senior Lecturer in History of Modern and Contemporary Art and Visual Culture at the University of Exeter. His interdisciplinary research navigates the intersections of visual culture with queer theory, performance studies, and the posthumanities in an attempt to think the production and mediations of embodied subjectivities in contemporary culture, their material and affective dimensions, ethics, and modes of belonging. In 2019–21, as a Leadership Fellow of the Arts and Humanities Research Council, João is investigating the ways in which the introduction of antiretroviral therapies for the management and prophylaxis of HIV have facilitated the development of new kinds of gay male sexual behavior and masculinities, which are in turn being mediated by 21st-century gay porn. His monograph Porous Masculinities (working title) will be published by Routledge in 2020.
